These days, of course, the modding community is much more robust and has a wider variety of mods available. You could crossbreed crops that could grow things like Redstone or Iron, for example. IndustrialCraft had a revolutionary system for industrial crop growing which was seen as being overly complicated and convoluted, but also quite powerful.
